Straight up

Also known as: Up

A preparation chilled with ice and then strained, served without ice in the glass, usually a stemmed cocktail glass.

Straight up describes a drink that is stirred or shaken with ice, then strained and served without ice in a stemmed glass. It is cold but no longer diluted further. Classic examples are the Martini or Daiquiri.

The term is occasionally also used for pure spirits, so it can be worth asking briefly whether a chilled or room-temperature drink is meant. Usually straight up is distinguished from neat by the chilling.
