A bartender is a professional who prepares drinks at the bar. This requires knowledge of spirits, ingredients, recipes and techniques as well as the ability to advise guests. Bartenders also develop their own creations and pay attention to hygiene, cost control and responsible service.
In Germany there is no separate, legally regulated training for bartenders alone. The route often leads through hospitality training and further courses. The term barkeeper is used largely as a synonym, whereas bartender often emphasises the craft of mixing.
