Mixology

German: Mixologie Pronunciation: mik-so-lo-gie Also known as: Mixology, Mixologe

The craft and science of cocktail making, combining technique, knowledge of ingredients and creative recipe development.

Mixology is the craft-based and creative discipline of mixing drinks. It covers the history of cocktails, knowledge of spirits and aromas, techniques and the development of new recipes. Mixologists often rely on fresh ingredients, homemade syrups, infusions or special ice preparations.

The term stresses the technical and experimental side, whereas barkeeper describes the service more strongly. In practice the roles overlap. Mixology has shaped bar culture strongly over recent decades and turned cocktails into a refined enjoyment experience.
