Garnish

Pronunciation: gar-nisch Also known as: Dekoration, Deko

An edible or decorative addition to a drink, such as a fruit slice, herb sprig or olive, that adds to its look and aroma.

The garnish is the decoration of a drink and forms part of the overall picture in many recipes. Common choices are citrus or orange slices, mint sprigs, olives, cocktail cherries or spices. A good garnish is not merely decorative but contributes to the experience through scent or flavour, for example the essential oils of citrus peel.

It should be fresh, cleanly cut and suited to the drink. Too much decoration looks overloaded and can get in the way when drinking.
