Rim

German: Rim (Glasrand) Also known as: Salzrand, Zuckerrand

A coating of salt, sugar or spice on the glass edge that complements the drink's taste and look.

A rim is a layer of salt, sugar, cocoa or spice on the edge of the glass. The edge is moistened with a citrus slice or a little syrup and dipped into the ingredient. Well-known are the salt rim on the Margarita and the sugar rim on the Sidecar or Crusta.

The rim is part of the flavour, since each sip adds a seasoning note. It should only be applied to the outside of the edge so that nothing falls into the drink. Those who dislike it can order the drink without a rim.
