Jigger
Pronunciation: dschi-ger Also known as: Messbecher, Barmaß
A double-sided metal measuring cup used to dose spirits and juices precisely in the bar.
The jigger is a measuring cup with two sides of different sizes, often marked in centilitres or ounces. Typical combinations are 2 and 4 cl or 25 and 50 ml. It lets ingredients be measured quickly and reproducibly so that a drink tastes the same every time.
It is also important for economical working, since overpouring is avoided. The alternative is free pouring, which takes practice and is less exact. Jiggers come in many forms, from classic ones to versions with an internal scale.
