Muddler
German: Muddler (Stößel) Also known as: Stößel, Muddle-Stab
A stick-shaped tool made of wood, plastic or stainless steel used to press fruit, herbs or sugar in a glass or shaker.
The muddler is a rod-shaped bar tool with a rounded or toothed end. It is used to press ingredients such as lime pieces, mint or sugar cubes in a glass or shaker so that juice, fruit oils and aromas are released.
Pressure should be measured: herbs are pressed gently so that torn leaves do not release bitter compounds, whereas citrus and sugar can be worked harder. The tool is known from drinks such as the Caipirinha, Mojito and Old Fashioned.
