Smoothie

Pronunciation: smu:-thi

A pureed drink of whole fruit or vegetables, often with juice or yoghurt; thick and fruity.

A smoothie is a creamy drink made from pureed fruit or vegetables, mostly with juice, water, yoghurt or plant-based drink. Unlike juice, pulp and fibre are largely retained, so the consistency is thick.

In shops, smoothies are sold chilled and either pasteurised or pressure-treated. The sugar mainly comes from the fruit itself; some products contain added sugar. The fruit share can be very high, and the mix of fruits determines the taste. A smoothie is not considered a full meal but can be a snack. A smoothie with vegetables often tastes more tart and less sweet than pure fruit blends.
