Classic (sparkling)
German: Classic Also known as: Sprudel, Mit Kohlensäure
Term for mineral water with a high carbon dioxide content.
“Classic” is the term manufacturers use for mineral water with plenty of carbonation. The water bubbles strongly, foams noticeably when opened and tastes fresh and tingly. The German terms “Sprudel”, “Säuerling” and “Sauerbrunnen” are only permitted for water with more than 250 milligrams of natural carbon dioxide per litre.
The designations for carbonation strength are not precisely defined by law, but in practice the content is usually clearly higher than for medium. Classic is suited for drinking neat and for spritzers. Because of the high pressure in the container, bottles should not be stored warm or shaken strongly. The counterparts are “medium” with less and “still” with no or very little carbonation.
