Isotonic drink

German: Isotonisches Getränk Also known as: Sportgetränk, Isogetränk, Isotonisch

A sports drink with a similar concentration of dissolved particles as blood, supplying fluid, minerals and carbohydrates.

An isotonic drink contains dissolved substances, mainly carbohydrates and minerals such as sodium, in a concentration similar to human blood. This allows the body to absorb fluid and nutrients comparatively quickly. Typical values are around 6 to 8 grams of carbohydrates per 100 millilitres.

Such drinks are mainly used during prolonged physical exertion, for instance endurance sports. For quenching thirst in everyday life water or spritzers usually suffice. In contrast there are hypotonic drinks with lower and hypertonic ones with higher concentration, such as fruit juices or cola. The label shows ingredients, sugar and mineral content.
