Spritzer (juice and sparkling water)

German: Schorle Pronunciation: scho:r-le Also known as: Saftschorle, Apfelschorle, Fruchtschorle

A non-alcoholic mixed drink of fruit juice and mineral water, usually 1:1 to 1:2.

Schorle (also juice spritzer) is a non-alcoholic mixed drink of fruit juice and sparkling mineral water. Common mixes are 1:1 or one part juice to two parts water. Apple spritzer is the most widespread, but blackcurrant, cherry or rhubarb spritzers are popular too.

Schorle quenches thirst better than pure juices and has less sugar per glass. Ready-made spritzers are sold, with fruit content set by food guidelines depending on type. In south-west Germany, the mix with wine is also called “Schorle”, such as Weinschorle, which retains alcohol. With the word “Schorle” alone, context is therefore important.
