Spring water

German: Quellwasser

Water from underground sources bottled at the spring; must meet drinking water quality but need not be officially recognised.

Spring water comes from underground water bodies and is bottled at the source. It must meet requirements for drinking water but is not officially recognised as mineral water and needs no particular mineral composition.

In contrast to natural mineral water it is therefore not bound to a constant composition. It may only be treated to a limited extent, for instance by filtration. Spring water is mostly offered still, occasionally with carbonation. Taste is often mild to neutral. It is a cheaper alternative to mineral water that can nevertheless be a natural product from protected sources.
