Fizzy drink

German: Brause

Colloquial term for sweet carbonated lemonade, especially common in eastern Germany and in earlier times.

Brause is a colloquial term for a sweet carbonated soft drink, today mostly called Limonade. The name derives from the fizzing of the drink when opened and poured. Brausepulver (fizzing powder), which bubbles when dissolved in water, also belongs to this family.

In eastern Germany in particular, Brause is still a frequently used everyday word. Typical flavours are lemon, orange, raspberry, woodruff and cola mix. Brause drinks may be made with fruit juice, flavourings and colourings. As a legally defined term Brause plays no role; in trade, such products appear under the names lemonade or soft drink.
