Medicinal water

German: Heilwasser Also known as: Heilquellenwasser

Water with a proven preventive or relieving effect that must be authorised under medicinal law.

Medicinal water comes from a healing spring and its ingredients are composed so that, according to scientific findings, it can have preventive, relieving or curative properties. In Germany it falls under medicinal products law and needs authorisation.

The label must state the ingredients as well as areas of application and dosage notes. Depending on the spring, medicinal waters contain especially high amounts of calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, sulphate or sodium. They are no substitute for medical advice and should be used only as stated on the pack or as advised. It differs from mineral water through its authorisation as a medicinal product and its required effect.
