Simple syrup

German: Zuckersirup (Simple Syrup) Also known as: Läuterzucker, Zuckersirup, Gomme

A simple solution of sugar and water, usually 1:1 or 2:1, that sweetens cocktails and mixes in easily.

Sugar syrup is made by dissolving sugar in water, cold or gently warmed. A ratio of one part sugar to one part water (light syrup) or two parts sugar to one part water (rich syrup) is common. Because it is liquid, it distributes better in cold drinks than solid sugar.

It forms the sweetening component of many classics such as the Daiquiri or Whiskey Sour. In the refrigerator it keeps for a few weeks. It can be varied into aromatic syrups with herbs, spices or fruit.
