Orange wine

German: Orange Wine Pronunciation: o-ranzh wain Also known as: Maischevergorener Weißwein, Skin-Contact-Wein

White wine fermented on the skins like red wine. This gives it colour, tannins and powerful aromas.

Orange wine is made from white grapes that are not pressed immediately but fermented together with the berry skins, often for days to months. As a result colouring matter, tannins and aromas pass from the skin into the wine, which takes on an amber to orange hue.

In taste the wines are often powerful, with notes of dried fruit, tea and spice and slightly austere tannin. The method comes from Georgia and Friuli and has attracted attention in recent years. The wine has nothing to do with oranges. Orange wine is so far not a legally protected term.
