Single vineyard site

German: Einzellage Also known as: Lage, Weinlage, Weinbergslage

A clearly delimited vineyard with its own name. Soil, slope and climate shape the character of the wine.

A single vineyard site is a precisely defined plot of vines that carries its own name in wine law. Soil type, slope, aspect and microclimate differ from site to site and noticeably influence the wines, even when the same grape variety is grown.

In Germany the naming of a site on the label is bound to rules. In addition there are top sites and Grosse Gewächse, regarded as especially high-quality single-vineyard wines. The site is a central element of what is called terroir.
