Port wine
German: Portwein Also known as: Port
Fortified sweet wine from Portugal's Douro Valley whose fermentation is halted by adding brandy.
Port wine comes from the Douro Valley in Portugal. Neutral brandy is added during fermentation, which kills the yeast and leaves part of the sugar in the wine. The result is a sweet wine with raised alcohol content, known as fortified wine.
Styles include ruby types matured in tank or wood (Ruby) and those aged longer in wooden casks (Tawny), as well as vintage ports (Vintage). Port is often enjoyed with dessert and cheese.
