Gutswein (estate wine)

German: Gutswein Pronunciation: guts-wein Also known as: Estate wine

Entry level of the VDP classification: wine from the estate's own vineyards, without a specific site name and mostly for easy enjoyment.

Gutswein is the lowest tier of the VDP quality pyramid. It comes from grapes of the respective estate but carries no site or village name. It is meant to show the regional signature and varietal typicity of the estate.

The wines are mostly fresh, fruity and intended for early enjoyment, but are also subject to strict quality requirements such as limited yields. For many customers the Gutswein is the entry to an estate's range and the most accessible in price. Above it come Ortswein, Erste Lage and Grosse Lage.
