Grape variety

German: Rebsorte Also known as: Rebsorten, Traubensorte

The type of grapevine a wine is made from, such as Riesling or Pinot Noir. It shapes aroma, acidity and style.

A grape variety is a distinct cultivated form of the grapevine with typical traits. These include ripening time, yield, resilience and above all the aroma profile of the berries. There are several thousand varieties worldwide, but only a few dozen matter greatly in trade.

The variety may be named on the label if the wine contains a prescribed minimum share of it. Single-variety wines show the character of the grape particularly clearly, while a blend combines several varieties into one overall picture.
