Weissherbst
German: Weißherbst Pronunciation: vais-herpst
Rosé wine made from a single red grape variety, designated as quality wine of one variety and one region.
Weissherbst is a protected term in Germany for rosé wine pressed from a single red grape variety. As with white wine, the grapes are pressed directly or after a short standing time, so only little colour passes from the skins into the juice. It must reach at least quality-wine level.
The colour ranges from delicate pink to salmon. Spätburgunder Weissherbst is common. An ordinary rosé, by contrast, may also be made from several varieties. The grape variety must be named on the label. In taste the wines are usually fresh, fruity and suited to the summer glass.
