Quality wine (Qualitätswein)

German: Qualitätswein Also known as: Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete, QbA

German quality level for wine from a designated growing region that passed an official test and meets minimum requirements.

In Germany, Qualitätswein denotes wine from one of the designated growing regions whose grapes reach a prescribed minimum must weight. The wine is officially tested and receives a test number printed on the label.

The classification follows the European principle of origin: the more narrowly the origin is defined, the higher the system ranks the quality level. Above it sit the Prädikat wines with special ripeness levels, alongside protected designations of origin with village and vineyard names. The applicable regulations are decisive.
