Prädikat wine

German: Prädikatswein Pronunciation: pre-di-kats-wein Also known as: Prädikatswein, Wein mit Prädikat

Highest German quality tier based on grape ripeness, without added sugar. Levels range from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese.

Prädikat wines are quality wines in which only the natural sugar content of the grapes (the must weight) determines the classification. Enrichment with sugar is not permitted. The levels are Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese, rising with the ripeness at harvest.

The designation says nothing about sweetness at first: a Prädikat wine can be made dry, off-dry or sweet. Different minimum must weights apply depending on variety and region. The applicable regulations are decisive.
