Dosage

Pronunciation: do-sahsch Also known as: Versandlikör, Expeditionslikör

Addition of a liqueur of wine and sugar after disgorging in sparkling wine. It determines how sweet the finished wine tastes.

During bottle fermentation of sparkling wine, the settled yeast is removed by disgorging. Some liquid is lost in the process, and the bottle is topped up with dosage liqueur. This consists of wine and sugar (expedition liqueur).

The amount of sugar in the dosage determines the sweetness of the finished sparkling wine, from brut nature with no added sugar to doux as a sweet variant. Besides sugar it can also round off aromas. The label shows the result as a taste designation such as brut or extra dry.
