Landwein (regional wine)

German: Landwein

Wine with protected geographical indication, simpler than quality wine but naming a larger region.

Landwein is a wine category with protected geographical indication. It comes from a larger defined area and must meet the origin and minimum alcohol requirements that apply. In Germany Landweine are offered as dry or off-dry.

Similar categories exist in other countries, such as Vin de Pays in France (now IGP) or Indicazione Geografica Tipica in Italy. Landwein gives producers more freedom regarding grape varieties and winemaking than quality wines with protected designation of origin.
