Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)

German: Geschützte geografische Angabe (g.g.A.) Also known as: g.g.A., ggA, PGI

An EU protection mark for products where at least one production stage takes place in the named area.

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) requires that at least one production stage takes place in a specific area and that a link exists between product and region, for example through reputation or characteristics. Requirements are somewhat less strict than for PDO.

For wine it corresponds roughly to Landwein. Typical examples in beverages are regional beers, fruit juices, mineral waters or spirits. The protection prevents the name from being used from outside the region. The applicable regulations are authoritative.
