Origin labelling
German: Herkunftsangabe Also known as: Ursprungsland, Herkunftsbezeichnung
A statement of the country or region a product comes from, with rules against misleading claims.
Origin statements on drinks must be accurate and must not mislead customers. For certain products, such as wine, they are mandatory. For others they must be given if omitting them could be misleading.
Protected designations and indications such as PDO and PGI offer additional protection. Names such as 'Champagne' may only be used for products from the region that gives the name. The country of bottling may also be stated, which does not always match the country of growing or raw materials. The applicable regulations are authoritative.
