Allergen labelling

German: Allergenkennzeichnung Also known as: Allergene, Sulfitkennzeichnung

The duty to highlight 14 allergenic substances or products in labelling.

Under EU law, 14 groups of substances that frequently trigger allergies or intolerances must be labelled on prepacked foods and drinks. They include cereals containing gluten, milk, eggs, sulphites, celery and nuts. The declaration is made in the ingredient list, usually highlighted in print.

For drinks, sulphite labelling is particularly relevant: wine and many other products carry the note 'contains sulphites'. For unpacked goods served in hospitality, allergens must be communicated, for example on the menu or verbally. The applicable regulations are authoritative.
