Natural mineral water (designation)

German: Natürliches Mineralwasser (Bezeichnung) Also known as: Mineralwasser, Mineral- und Tafelwasserverordnung

Officially recognised water from a protected underground source that may only be treated in limited ways.

The designation 'natural mineral water' is legally protected. The water comes from an underground source protected against contamination, must be bottled at the source and requires official recognition. It must be originally pure and may only be treated within narrow limits, such as removing iron or sulphur or adding carbon dioxide.

The composition is stated on the label. Spring water and table water are to be distinguished from mineral water, as different requirements apply to each. The applicable regulations are authoritative.
