Winemaker (vintner)

German: Winzer Also known as: Weinbauer, Weingut, Kellerei

A person or business that grows vines and makes wine from them, often from vineyard to bottling.

A vintner tends vineyard areas, harvests the grapes and makes wine from them. In the narrower sense the word means businesses that grow their own grapes and vinify them in their own cellar, as opposed to merchants who buy in wine or grapes.

In Germany terms such as wine estate, winegrowers' cooperative and winery also occur. A cooperative unites the grapes of many members and markets them together. Winzer is a recognised vocational trade. The work follows the annual cycle of pruning, canopy work, harvest and cellar work.
