Beerenauslese (BA)

Also known as: BA

Sweet wine made from overripe, usually botrytised individual berries that are selectively picked.

For a Beerenauslese, individual overripe berries, often affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), are picked by hand. Water loss concentrates sugar and aromas. The Prädikat level sits above Auslese.

The wine is distinctly sweet, usually moderate in alcohol and made in small quantities because harvesting is laborious and weather dependent. It is often bottled in half bottles and served with desserts or cheese.
