Medium dry
German: Halbtrocken Also known as: medium dry
Taste designation for wine with slightly noticeable residual sweetness, between dry and sweet. The sugar content is legally limited.
Medium dry describes wines with somewhat more residual sugar than dry wines but clearly less than sweet ones. Under European rules the range lies roughly between the limit for dry and at most 12 grams of residual sugar per litre, slightly more with matching acidity.
The light sweetness softens acidity and makes wines approachable without tasting outright sweet. Medium-dry wines go well with lightly spiced dishes. In Germany the term is often complemented or replaced by feinherb. The applicable regulations are decisive.
