Single malt

German: Single Malt Pronunciation: sing-gel molt Also known as: Single Malt Whisky

Whisky made from malted barley distilled at a single distillery, usually in pot stills. It is not mixed with other distilleries.

A single malt whisky consists exclusively of malted barley and is made at one single distillery, traditionally in pot stills. It can be composed of casks of different vintages as long as all come from the same distillery. Single therefore stands for the distillery, not for a single cask.

For Scotch whisky a minimum maturation of three years in oak applies. Single malts often have a pronounced character shaped by water, malt, still shape and cask type. An age statement on the bottle refers to the youngest whisky contained. The respective origin regulations are decisive.
