Pot still

German: Brennblase Also known as: Pot Still, Brennkessel

A copper vessel with head and condenser for batch distillation. It yields aromatic distillates and works in batches.

The pot still is the classic distilling apparatus. It consists of a bulbous kettle in which the liquid is heated, a head with neck and a condenser. It is usually made of copper, which binds unwanted sulphur compounds.

Unlike the column it works in batches: fill, distil, empty. Distillation is often repeated, for example in wash still and spirit still for malt whisky. The shape and size of the still influence how light or heavy the distillate becomes. Pot stills are used for whisky, cognac, fruit brandies and many rums.
