Pronunciation: dschin Also known as: London Dry Gin
A juniper spirit made from neutral alcohol and botanicals. Juniper must dominate in taste.
Gin is a spirit in which juniper forms the predominant flavour note. The base is neutral alcohol flavoured with botanicals such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, angelica root or spices. This is done by distilling or macerating the ingredients.
In the EU gin must have at least 37.5 percent ABV. Well-known styles are London dry gin, Old Tom and genever. Newer, so-called New Western gins emphasise botanicals other than juniper. Gin is the base of classic drinks such as the gin and tonic and the Martini. The applicable regulations are decisive.
