Aquavit

Pronunciation: a-kva-wit Also known as: Akvavit

Scandinavian spirit from neutral alcohol flavoured mainly with caraway or dill. Minimum strength is 37.5 percent.

Aquavit, also akvavit, is a spirit from Scandinavia whose dominant aroma usually comes from caraway or dill. Further spices such as fennel, aniseed, coriander or orange peel are added depending on the recipe. The base is neutral alcohol from grain or potatoes.

Production is by macerating or distilling the spices. Some aquavits mature in casks and turn golden yellow as a result. The name derives from Latin aqua vitae, water of life. It is traditionally served ice cold with rich foods such as fish or roasts. The applicable regulations are decisive.
