Korn (German grain spirit)
German: Korn Pronunciation: korn Also known as: Doppelkorn, Kornbrand
German grain spirit from wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat, without added flavouring, with at least 32 percent ABV.
Korn is a grain spirit made in Germany from wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat. The grain is milled, fermented and distilled. Unlike vodka, some grain aroma remains. Flavourings and sugar must not be added.
The minimum alcohol content is 32 percent ABV. Besides the standard there is Doppelkorn, usually at 38 percent; this is a market convention rather than a separate legal category. True Kornbrand must be distilled from grain mash, and the name Kornbrand is reserved for special products. Classically it is drunk ice cold as a schnapps, but also used as a mixing ingredient.
