Absinthe

German: Absinth Pronunciation: ab-zint Also known as: Absinthe

Herbal spirit with wormwood, aniseed and fennel. Traditionally diluted with cold water, which makes it turn cloudy.

Absinthe is a spirit flavoured with wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), aniseed and fennel as well as other herbs. The alcohol content is usually high, often between 45 and 72 percent ABV. It is usually green or clear.

Traditionally cold water is slowly dripped over a sugar cube into the glass. The absinthe turns cloudy as the essential oils flocculate. Once banned in many countries, it is now permitted in the EU with limits for the ingredient thujone. The term absinthe is not tied to a specific origin.
