Vodka

German: Wodka Pronunciation: vot-ka Also known as: Vodka

A neutral-tasting spirit from grain, potatoes or other raw materials, usually heavily filtered, at 37.5 percent or more.

Vodka is a spirit meant to be as neutral as possible in smell and taste. It is made from grain, potatoes or other fermentable raw materials, distilled several times and often filtered, for example over activated charcoal. It is then brought to drinking strength with water.

In the EU the minimum alcohol content is 37.5 percent ABV. Main countries of origin are Russia, Poland, Sweden and Finland. Although vodka is regarded as flavourless, brands differ by raw material and distilling method. Flavoured vodkas such as those with bison grass form a group of their own.
