Scotch whisky

German: Scotch Whisky Also known as: Scotch

Whisky from Scotland that must be matured for at least three years in oak casks.

Scotch Whisky is a protected designation for whisky made from grain, distilled and matured in Scotland. It must rest in oak casks for at least three years before it may be called that. Types include Single Malt, Blended Malt, Blended Scotch and Single Grain.

The regions (for example Speyside, Highlands, Islay) stand for different styles; Islay whiskies are often smoky from peat. The age on the bottle refers to the youngest whisky it contains.
