Weinbrand (German brandy)
German: Weinbrand Also known as: Deutscher Weinbrand
A spirit from distilled wine, aged in oak. The designation is regulated in Germany.
Weinbrand is the German term for brandy made from wine. It is distilled from wine and must, under EU rules, mature for at least one year in oak containers or at least six months in oak barrels of less than 1,000 litres. It is then brought to drinking strength with water and often blended for a uniform taste.
The name cognac is reserved exclusively for French spirit from the Cognac region. German Weinbrand often tastes milder and rounder and is frequently used as a digestif or in mixed drinks. The minimum alcohol content under EU law is 36 percent ABV; “Deutscher Weinbrand” is additionally subject to stricter national requirements. The applicable regulations are decisive.
