Rum
Pronunciation: rum Also known as: Rhum
A spirit from sugarcane juice or molasses, fermented and distilled. White, golden and dark styles exist, often cask-aged.
Rum is made from sugarcane juice or from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. Both are fermented and then distilled. The main producing areas are in the Caribbean, Central and South America and the Indian Ocean.
A distinction is made between white rum, which matures little or briefly, golden rum and long-aged dark rum. A speciality is rhum agricole, made directly from fresh sugarcane juice. Aromas range from light and floral to heavy and molasses-like. Rum is the base of many cocktails and is also drunk neat.
