Hawthorne strainer
German: Hawthorne-Strainer Pronunciation: [ˈhɔːθɔːn] Also known as: Hawthorne
A bar strainer with a coiled spring that is placed on a shaker or mixing glass and holds back ice and coarse solids.
The Hawthorne strainer consists of a flat, usually perforated metal plate with a coiled spring set into it. The spring rests against the rim of the shaker and holds back ice and larger pieces of fruit while the liquid flows into the glass. Lugs on the rim keep it secure on the tin.
It is the common strainer for Boston shakers. The position of the spring can be used to influence the flow. For very fine particles a tea strainer is often added as well (fine strain).
