Radler (shandy)

German: Radler Also known as: Alsterwasser, Shandy

A beer mix drink of beer and lemon soda, usually 1:1; called Alsterwasser in northern Germany.

Radler is a mixed beer drink made from beer and lemon soda. The classic mixture is about equal parts. The name is said to go back to a story about a Bavarian innkeeper in the 1920s who offered cyclists a lighter drink; this is not firmly documented.

Alcohol content is typically about 2 to 2.5 percent ABV, and ready-mixed Radlers in shops often have similar values. In the north the mix is called Alsterwasser; in southern Germany a version with wheat beer is sometimes called Russ. There are also ready versions with grapefruit, orange or herbal flavours, as well as non-alcoholic Radlers based on non-alcoholic beer.
