Munich Helles

German: Helles Also known as: Helles Lagerbier, Münchner Hell

A mild, easy-drinking, bottom-fermented lager of golden colour with a pronounced malt character, originally from Munich.

Helles is a bottom-fermented full-strength beer of golden colour whose character is shaped by malt. Hopping is restrained and the bitterness gentle. The style emerged in Munich at the end of the 19th century as a response to the popularity of Bohemian pilsners and still shapes Bavarian beer culture.

The original gravity is usually around 11 to 12 percent, the alcohol content roughly 4.7 to 5.4 percent ABV. Flavour is dominated by a soft, slightly bready and sweetish malt note with delicate hop spice. With low bitterness and high drinkability it is considered the classic beer for beer gardens and everyday drinking. The name is not legally defined and is interpreted differently by breweries.
