Craft beer
German: Craft-Bier Also known as: Handwerksbier, Craft Beer
Handcrafted beer from small, often independent breweries, usually emphasising aroma and style diversity.
Craft beer denotes beers made in small, mostly independent breweries in a hands-on way with a focus on flavour and diversity. In Germany the term is not legally protected and there is no binding definition.
Typical are experimental recipes, unusual hop varieties and modern interpretations of international styles such as IPA, stout, sour beer or pale ale. Many craft breweries work in small batches and rely on selected raw materials. The term is also used in trade for beers by larger producers, so it is worth looking at the brewery and recipe. Craft beers are often more expensive than standard types.
