Berliner Weisse

Also known as: Berliner Weiße

A tart, light wheat beer with low alcohol, traditionally drunk with syrup.

Berliner Weisse is a top-fermented wheat beer with low alcohol of mostly about 2.5 to 3 percent ABV and distinct acidity. The acidity comes from lactic acid bacteria working alongside the yeast. The taste is sparkling, fresh and lemony.

Traditionally it is served in a large bowl-shaped glass with a splash of raspberry or woodruff syrup to soften the acidity. The style originates in Berlin and its surroundings. Craft breweries reinterpret the style, sometimes with fruit.
