Wheat beer

German: Weizenbier Also known as: Weißbier, Hefeweizen, Weizen

A top-fermented beer with a large share of wheat malt; fruity and spicy with banana and clove notes.

Wheat beer is brewed with top fermentation and contains at least 50 percent wheat malt in the grist. Typical is fermentation with special yeasts that form fruity esters (banana) and spicy phenols (clove). The beer usually has low bitterness, lively carbonation and a creamy, dense head.

Hefeweizen stays naturally cloudy because the yeast remains in the bottle, while Kristallweizen is filtered and clear. Dark wheat beer is made with darker malt and tastes of caramel and roast. Alcohol content is typically around 5 to 5.5 percent ABV. Wheat beer is traditionally served in a tall, curved wheat beer glass that leaves room for the generous foam.
