Stout

Also known as: Porter

A very dark, top-fermented beer with roasted notes of coffee and chocolate from heavily roasted barley or malt.

Stout is a dark, top-fermented beer that grew out of the porter tradition of the British Isles. Its almost black colour and roasted character come from heavily roasted malt or unmalted roasted barley.

The flavour is dominated by coffee, dark chocolate and slight smoky or bready notes, with sweetness ranging from low to pronounced depending on the type. Common are dry stouts with moderate alcohol, milk stouts sweetened by lactose, and powerful imperial stouts well above 8 percent ABV. The head is often creamy and beige to brown. Stout combines well with desserts, oysters or strong cheese.
