Doppelbock

Also known as: Starkbier

An especially strong, malt-rich beer with typically 18 percent original gravity or more; brand names often end in “-ator”.

Doppelbock is an even stronger version of Bock beer with an original gravity of typically 18 percent or more and an alcohol content of mostly 7 to 9 percent ABV. The style originated in monasteries, where monks brewed a nourishing “liquid bread” for Lent.

The taste is intensely malty with notes of caramel, bread crust, toffee and dark fruit; the hop bitterness merely balances the sweetness. The colour ranges from deep gold to dark brown. Many breweries give their Doppelbocks names ending in “-ator”, a convention that has become established. Doppelbock is served in smaller glasses and only lightly chilled so that the aroma can develop.
